The Hidden Struggle of guilt and self-doubt in caregiving
40% of carers suffer from depression. How did we get in this intolerable situation?
TDP is 100% by and for the community! We want to hear from you! If you'd like to testify as a carer, family member or if you are affected by dementia, please reach out.
Many dealing with dementia express feeling an acute sense of guilt and self-doubt that lead them to question their every decision. The overwhelming sense of inadequacy in care, financial strains, and the emotional toll of disease progression is often just too much!
In this episode, we discuss the cognitive dissonance created by media portrayals of dementia, which starkly contrast with the harsh realities experienced by caregivers. We also explore societal silence around dementia which contributes to this confusion and isolation.
It's crucial to resist societal trends that dehumanize those with dementia and to fight for more compassion and humanity in addressing this condition. We have a duty to face these difficult discussions, and educate the public to be better prepared for what is now the leading cause of death in most countries.
